Your playlist extension stopped working

YouTube changes its page markup, and every extension built on top of it breaks sooner or later. The ones that come back are the ones somebody is still maintaining. Several of the popular playlist tools have not shipped a release in years — here is which, what each one did, and where that feature lives now.

What it did
Selected several videos at once to move, copy, sort, or de-duplicate them across your playlists.
Where it stands
No release in almost two years. Since late July 2026 its reviews have filled with reports that a YouTube change broke the selection — one from August 11 reads “some backend change on Youtube has removed a lot of the functionality.”

Playlist Wrangler covers all of it: filter to the videos you want, select them, and Add or Move them to any playlist in one step, with a one-tap undo. Duplicates surface on their own, because the same video across two playlists merges into a single row.

YT Watch Later Assist

Still maintained

What it did
Emptied Watch Later or Liked videos in bulk, and added an entire public playlist to Watch Later.
Where it stands
Still maintained — the developer shipped v4.1 in July 2026. A handful of reviews from mid-2026 report the bulk-add step failing, but this one is not abandoned, and if bulk-clearing is all you need it still does that job.

In Playlist Wrangler

Reach for Playlist Wrangler when clearing the list is not the point — when you want to see what is in there first. It indexes the whole of Watch Later, tags every video by topic, genre, mood and language, and lets you clear out only the part you are finished with.

YouTube Watch Later Organizer

This is the closest thing to a direct predecessor. Playlist Wrangler does the same automatic sorting across a much wider set of categories, and adds search, filtering, bulk edits and export on top.

Why this keeps happening

YouTube’s official API cannot see your Watch Later. That single fact shapes every tool on this page: to work on the playlists you actually care about, an extension has to read the YouTube page in front of you. So when YouTube reshuffles its markup, which it does without warning or announcement, things break.

Nobody can engineer their way out of that, and I am not going to pretend otherwise about my own extension. What is in anyone’s control is how fast the fix arrives. The extensions in the first section have gone between one and five years without a release, and their users found out the hard way. Playlist Wrangler has shipped more than twenty releases since it launched in June 2026, the most recent on September 5.

Which is also to say: these were good tools, built by people who solved a real problem and then got on with their lives. That is a normal end for a side project, and the sixty thousand people still running a broken copy of one are the actual casualty here.

Questions

Multiselect for YouTube stopped working. Is there a fix?
Not from the developer, so far. Its last release was October 4, 2024, and reviews since late July 2026 report that a change on YouTube’s side broke the selection behaviour. YouTube rearranges its page markup regularly, and an extension that is no longer being updated eventually stops matching it. Playlist Wrangler does the same bulk selection, moving, copying and de-duplicating, and it is actively maintained.
Why do YouTube extensions keep breaking?
Almost all of them, Playlist Wrangler included, read the YouTube page itself rather than an official API, because YouTube’s public API cannot see your Watch Later. That is the only way to build these tools, and the cost is that when YouTube reshuffles its page markup, extensions break. There is no way to prevent it. The only thing that separates a tool that recovers from one that dies is whether anyone is still shipping fixes.
Will Playlist Wrangler break too?
Parts of it will, at some point, for the reason above — and the honest answer is that it is built to fail quietly rather than break the page you are on. What differs is the response time. Playlist Wrangler has shipped more than twenty releases since it launched in June 2026, the most recent on September 5, 2026. When YouTube changes something, the fix is days away, not never. That is the whole difference between this and the extensions listed above.
Is Playlist Wrangler free?
Yes. Free and ad-free, with no paid tier. The automatic categorization is part of the free extension, not an upgrade.
Do I have to redo the organizing I did in my old extension?
There is nothing to redo, because there is nothing to set up. Playlist Wrangler scans your playlists and categorizes every video on its own, so you start with your whole library already sorted instead of an empty folder structure. Categories you add or edit by hand are never overwritten.
Does it need my Google account?
No. It reads the playlist pages from the YouTube session you are already signed into. There is no account to create, no OAuth screen, and no API key. The index stays in your browser’s local storage.
